SAF in focus: What’s next for aviation fuel?

The decarbonisation potential of SAF
ADVANCING THE ECOSYSTEM
Sustainable aviation fuels are one of the most promising levers to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from aviation. SAF is anticipated to provide the bulk of the emissions reductions needed by the aviation industry to reach its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with IATA estimating that SAF could contribute around 65% of the reduction in emissions required.
But every year, SAF demand outstrips supply, and SAF remains priced at around 3-4x more expensive than traditional kerosene. This panel discussion provided an update on the state of the SAF market and explained how the market needs to be stimulated by investment, regulatory frameworks and partnerships to improve affordability and availability of SAF for those who want it. It also provided greater context on carbon dioxide removals as a complementary solution.
Airbus is playing its part to scale use of sustainable aviation fuel in its own operations, and welcomed guests to the Airbus Summit 2025 to discuss the role of SAF in decarbonising aerospace.
