What is your name, job title, and where are you based?
Esther Tan, A330 Fleet Management Manager - APAC based in Singapore
Define your job title in one sentence
Understand our airline customers’ issues and act as enabler to help resolve them, thereby improving operational reliability
What’s one thing that makes your job exciting or special?
Having opportunities to collaborate and learn from different airlines, each with their own unique way of operating, has been incredibly rewarding. My goal is to contribute to improving the efficiency of their fleets, bringing positive change to each operator I work with.
What inspired you to join Airbus?
A company that is able to build something as magnificent as the A380 aircraft clearly has the capability to achieve anything it sets its mind to. When the opportunity to work alongside the A380 came up, it didn’t take much for me to say yes. Ultimately, it was the sense of endless possibilities that drew me to Airbus.
Is there something that surprised you about working for Airbus?
The first surprise was how culturally diverse Airbus is. It’s fascinating to connect with people from all over the world - some places I hadn’t even heard of before! Even after several years, I’m still amazed by the new roles and opportunities that continue to pop up along with Airbus’ evolution, ones I never knew existed. Everyday, Airbus reminds me just how truly dynamic and vast the world is.
Explain what you do in simple terms
My role involves working closely with different operators in the Asia-Pacific region and field service teams to understand any challenges they face. I also organize Fleet Review Meetings, where we present fleet performance updates to operators, highlight key points, and coordinate technical issues to be addressed by our Airbus specialists.
How does your role contribute to Airbus’ mission or the success of its products?
My work bridges the gap between customers and Airbus, whilst ensuring we provide solutions and support that truly address their needs. Ultimately, I aim to be a key enabler in improving operational reliability for our customers.
How has Airbus supported your career growth or personal development?
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to step into the leadership role as Engineering Manager, which was a pivotal moment in my personal development. I began to shift my perspective from focusing solely on individual tasks to understanding how the team as a whole moves forward and how that fits into the larger Airbus picture.
As an engineer, I’m accustomed to rapid thinking and in terms of black or white, but working with people is not always so straightforward. Building the understanding and rapport takes time and effort.
How has your career evolved since you joined Airbus?
I began my career as a Fleet Health Engineer, focusing on the day-to-day aircraft defects and ensuring aircraft were ready for dispatch. From there, I transitioned to a role where I took a more holistic view of the fleet, working on airline fleet-level improvements. I also had the chance to get involved in people management, helping to build and shape a cohesive team working towards a common goal. Now, as part of the Programmes team, I focus mainly on the A330 aircraft, supporting continuous improvements for the programme as a whole.
What’s your most memorable experience at Airbus? Why does it stand out?
I had the privilege of representing the Tailored Support Package (TSP) team to support operations for an airline in the Middle East. It was truly a memorable experience, being able to interact directly with the airline on-site, understand their challenges, and to collaborate with them to find solutions. The airline was very appreciative of Airbus’ support during their difficulties, and I’m proud to have been part of that effort.
Is there a specific project or moment you’re particularly proud of? Why?
Whenever TSP is mentioned as the benchmark for excellent A380 operational performance, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. It’s rewarding to know that all the hard work from everyone in the team is being recognized.
What advice would you give to someone starting a career in aerospace?
Be curious, deeply curious about everything related to your work and your ecosystem. This curiosity will help you connect the dots between your role and its impact on the bigger picture, fostering improvements and sparking innovative ideas.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Airbus?
Look beyond what is presented on the table. Consider whether the role aligns with your long-term development goals and what opportunities the company might offer for growth and advancement down the road.
What would you say to someone who doesn’t think they “fit” in aerospace?
I believe it’s not your background that determines whether you fit in a particular role or company. Sure, it might be more challenging at first compared to others with relevant credentials or experience, but that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed.
What truly matters is the effort you put in to understand the role and find ways to contribute. If you were selected for the position, it means that the hiring manager saw something in you that fits, so trust yourself and your abilities.
If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
Be receptive to the advice or feedback others offer - or simply be open to listening to what people have to say.
What do you appreciate most about Airbus as a workplace?
The inclusivity and diverse culture at Airbus is truly inspiring. Everyone’s unique background is celebrated, bringing added value to the team. As a female graduate entering the industry, I initially faced the challenge of proving myself and gaining recognition in a field where the majority of the engineers were male. However, the inclusive culture at Airbus has been instrumental in supporting my growth and success. My ability to advance within the company is a testament to the equality and opportunities provided to all employees, regardless of gender.
Which Airbus value resonates with you, and why?
“We are one.”
I’ve always believed in the saying , “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Airbus is not a company looking for a one-time success; we are committed to continuously surpassing our own achievements and leading the market. This is a journey that never truly ends, and it requires all of us to come together, harnessing each other’s strengths to keep moving forward as one.
How does Airbus support you in maintaining work-life balance?
Airbus fosters a culture of trust and autonomy, allowing employees to manage their own work schedules. I’ve never experienced a situation where managers are micromanaging, questioning reasons for leaving early or arriving late, as long as the work is getting done and there’s no abuse of the flexibility.
When I was taking evening classes, my managers were supportive and gave me the flexibility to come in an hour earlier and leave earlier in the evening to attend my classes, which made balancing work and study much easier.
What motivates you to keep growing in your career?
I find it incredibly motivating to explore different aspects of the business and discover how I can grow while making meaningful contributions. As my career progresses, I’m also driven by chances to share my knowledge and experiences - whether it’s supporting new team members or working together to continuously improve the way we operate.
What’s one message you’d like to share with the next generation of aerospace professionals?
Don’t limit your vision to what exists today - imagine what could be possible in the future! After all, there was a time when people didn’t believe humans could fly, yet we made it happen!
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that inspires you in your work?
You have to accept whatever comes, and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.
- Eleanor Roosevelt
