EGNOS V3 is the second generation of Europe's Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS), it improves the accuracy and reliability of global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo, by providing augmentation data which strengthen positioning performance. It also integrates essential safety features for civil aviation, while offering new services for maritime and land users.
Featuring three operational centres and more than 50 monitoring stations in Europe and abroad, EGNOS V3 monitors signals from satellite navigation systems. It generates augmentation messages that are broadcast to all users via geostationary satellites, thereby improving positioning accuracy. Airbus has been awarded the main contract for the implementation phase of EGNOS V3 from ESA on behalf of the European Commission and EUSPA. The Airbus Defence and Space team is directly responsible for system and performance activities, the development of central processing facilities with improved navigation algorithms, as well as the System Performance Simulation Platform. Airbus leads an industrial consortium made up of 20 European companies
Airbus is also the leading supplier of state-of-the-art navigation payloads supporting EGNOS and its U.S counterpart WAAS.
