Urban Air Mobility

Taking electric flight into lower airspace

CityAirbus NextGen

Contributing to tomorrow's mobility

Reaching isolated areas, supporting first responders in addition to their regular modes of intervention or complementing existing transport networks are projected to remain key areas of development for mobility in the future.  Providing people with a safe, low-carbon and convenient solution that leverages the airspace above cities and communities could be a solution.

Advanced air mobility leverages lower airspace to better link people to cities and regions, giving them more possibilities to connect. At Airbus, we believe advanced air mobility can positively contribute to a multimodal mobility system.

Since 2014, Airbus has been exploring how recent technology advancements – from battery capacity and autonomy to electric propulsion – can help drive the development of a new kind of aerial transport .To do so, the Company takes a holistic approach to advanced air mobility, seamlessly integrating a variety of critical components.

A comprehensive approach to urban air mobility

  • The technology
CityAirbus NextGen is an all-electric, four-seat vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) prototype. Based on a lift and cruise concept, it boasts an 80-km operational range and a cruise speed of 120 km/h – making it perfectly suited to a variety of flight operations.   Read more
  • Airspace management
Advanced air mobility also requires designing,  developing and building the critical infrastructure necessary to allow new aircraft, including eVTOLs and delivery drones, to safely enter and share the skies of our future.  Read more
  • Regulatory frameworks
Working with public and private stakeholders to set up the necessary regulatory and public co-creation frameworks is also a key step that will ensure advanced air mobility achieves maximum societal benefits.
  • Infrastructure
To ensure the seamless integration of advanced air mobility into a city or a community’s transport network, Airbus is exploring how eVTOLs can complement existing infrastructure for the benefit of citizens.
