Meet Lena

What is your current role and where are you based?

I am based in Bremen in the north of Germany, working in the cabin & cargo area of engineering safety & security systems, on all aircraft programmes.

How long have you been working at Airbus?

I joined Airbus in 2015 as a dual student, and became an accredited Aircraft mechanic at the same time. For my final thesis I joined the system Engineering team for cabin & cargo systems. After two years working as an Engineer I took the opportunity to go on a two-year educational sabbatical to acquire additional technical knowledge as well as undergoing personal development. Now I’m back 🙂

Which aircraft/products are you working with?

My team is working on different aircraft systems for all civil aircraft programmes alongside colleagues from other Airbus divisions. Our core activities range from cargo systems to fire protection to cargo door actuation and evacuation. My job is varied and super interesting.

Concerning the beginning of your career path at Airbus - what was the main drive that led you to apply and be part of this company?

I started my career with an Internship for girls in 2013, tailored specifically for budding women professionals. I was inspired by the aircraft products, international culture and  diverse development opportunities available

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is the diversity of the people I work with who come from many different backgrounds and cultures. Providing lots of opportunities to learn new things.

I also appreciate the variety of technical topics I get to work on. Every day, I’m benefiting from the experiences and lessons my colleagues have gained over the years.

Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences from your career at Airbus. What made it so special and unforgettable?

A two month internship in China during my studies  which gave me the opportunity to experience different ways of working in Airbus. Probably the most memorable moment was celebrating Chinese New Year with my local colleagues. Truly experiencing Life at Airbus.

What is the most important advice you have been given, and is there any important advice you would like to give?

One of the most important pieces of advice I received was to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow. In the aviation industry, where innovation and problem-solving are crucial, viewing obstacles in this way has helped me to be resilient and adaptable.

Always Believe in Yourself and your capabilities

This is advice I would like to give, especially to women in aviation. Confidence can open doors and lead to opportunities that you may never thought possible.

What is the most important message  you would like to send out to women considering a career in the aeronautic industry?

Pursue your Passion! The most important message I would send to fellow women is to pursue your passion fearlessly.

The aeronautic industry offers plenty of opportunities for everyone, being a woman with a unique perspective helps drive innovation and progress. Don’t let stereotypes deter you, enthusiasm and skills are what really matter.

What are the benefits of working at Airbus?

Airbus’ commitment to professional development, an opportunity to continuously enhance your skills with the support  management for personal development and continuous learning. And of course, a great team that makes you feel like a valued member.

Do you have any hobbies? How do you enjoy spending your free time?

I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. Being in nature or by the river helps me recharge and brings a sense of balance to my life.
